Hurricane Sandra weakened slightly Thursday but was still a Category 3 storm in the eastern Pacific off Mexico's coast.

The hurricane had maximum sustained winds of 195 kilometers per hour (120 miles per hour). The U.S. National Hurricane Center said rapid weakening of the storm was expected: Sandra was forecast to weaken to a tropical storm Friday night and become a remnant low on Saturday.

Sandra was centered about 610 kilometers (380 miles) south of the southern tip of Mexico's Baja California peninsula and was moving north about 19 kph (12 mph).

A tropical storm watch was in effect for the Baja California peninsula from Todos Santos to Los Barriles.
