An Indian juvenile court has deferred handing down a verdict for the teenager involved in last year's fatal gang rape case.

The New Delhi juvenile court had been widely expected to announce the verdict Thursday. Court officials say the verdict will be announced July 25.

The suspect, who was 17 at the time of the attack, faces a maximum sentence of three years.

The trial of the adult suspects continues in a separate court. They are facing the death penalty, if found guilty. One of the five adult suspects died in prison earlier this year.

In the December attack a 23-year-old woman was beaten, raped and tortured on a moving New Delhi bus. The rape sparked massive protests across India and calls for the country to address crimes against women.

The victim died from her injuries two weeks after the assault at a hospital in Singapore where she had been flown for treatment.
