Indonesian Helicopter Carrying 10 Soldiers Missing

An Indonesian military Bell 412 helicopter carrying 10 soldiers on an inland logistical operation went missing Wednesday over the jungles of North Kalimantan.

The helicopter left Tarakan and was supposed to land in Long Iram, Nunukan about an hour later. But it lost contact with a control tower 15 minutes after takeoff, and until now its whereabouts remain unknown.

Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal & Security Affairs Djoko Suyanto told VOA the Indonesian military is conducting a search and rescue operation Thursday, with some military airplanes as well as aircraft belonging to private companies and missionaries in East Kalimantan.

"It's raining in Java now, but I have just called our military command in East Kalimantan, and according to them the weather is quite good to resume the search and rescue operation this morning. We have asked some aircrafts from private companies and missionaries in East Kalimantan, including our military aircrafts."

The Bell 412 is a utility helicopter manufactured by Bell Helicopter.
