Iran Detains Diplomat from Spain

TEXT SIZE - +

Spain says it has summoned Iran's ambassador in Madrid for questioning after Iranian authorities detained a senior Spanish diplomat in Tehran.

Spanish Foreign Ministry officials say Iranian security forces detained Ignacio Perez Cambra near the Spanish Embassy on Monday and held him for four hours.

There was no immediate word from Iran on why the diplomat was detained, but some news reports say he was near the site of an anti-government rally organized by opposition activists.

The French news agency, AFP, quotes a Spanish Foreign Ministry spokeswoman as saying Spain summoned Iran's ambassador to protest what it considers a "very serious and unacceptable incident."
