Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has condemned the killings of protesters in Libya, calling the government's actions there "unimaginable."

Ahmadinejad said Wednesday that Arab leaders must listen to their people, and he questioned how leaders could use "machine guns, tanks and bombs" against their citizens.

He also predicted that the unrest in North Africa and the Middle East would spread to other continents, including Europe and North America.  Protesters have toppled the leaders in Tunisia and Egypt, and demonstrators are calling for reform in a number of other countries from Morocco to Yemen and Bahrain.

Ahmadinejad's own government resorted to violence to disperse an opposition rally earlier this month.  At least two demonstrators died during the clashes.

Iranian police and paramilitary groups also used force to quell protests after Ahmadinejad's re-election in 2009.  Rights groups say hundreds of people were detained during the post-election crackdown.  At least 20 people were reported killed during the protests.

Some information for this report was provided by AP, AFP and Reuters.
