Former White House press secretary Jay Carney has joined CNN as a political commentator.
The cable television news network said Carney will appear on CNN for the first time Wednesday night during the network’s prime-time coverage of President Barack Obama’s speech (9 p.m. EDT, 0100 GMT Thursday), laying out his strategy to defeat the Islamic State militant group.
The former White House staffer resigned in May and left the White House in June after 3½ years as Obama's primary spokesman.
Carney's press secretary predecessor, Robert Gibbs, also became a paid contributor for a cable TV news channel. He joined MSNBC two years after leaving the White House post in the Obama administration.
Several press secretaries under President George W. Bush, including Ari Fleischer and Tony Snow, were CNN contributors at different times, and Dana Perino is a Fox News co-host on a show called The Five.
