When Secretary of State John Kerry touched down Wednesday in Bahrain, he made U.S. history.

With the trip, Kerry has now traveled more kilometers on diplomatic missions than any other U.S. secretary of state.

According to the State Department, Kerry has flown a little more than 1,609,000 kilometers (just short of 1 million miles), barely beating the old record held by Condoleezza Rice.

Kerry has spent more than 2,300 hours in the air, and he shows no signs of slowing down.

But Hillary Clinton still has the record for most countries visited as secretary of state — 112.
