South Africa says former president Nelson Mandela is "responding to treatment," although he remains in critical condition.

A brief statement from the presidency says President Jacob Zuma visited Mandela in the hospital Wednesday evening.

The president said he is encouraged that the Nobel Peace laureate is responding to treatment and urged the public to continue showing its support.

The 94-year-old Mandela, who led the struggle to bring down apartheid, has spent 32 days in a Pretoria hospital, where he was taken for a lung infection.
