Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump made an embarrassing gaffe while campaigning for the New York primary, referring to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 as 7/11.

He made the error while speaking at a campaign rally in Buffalo Monday.

"It's very close to my heart because I was down there and I watched our police and our firemen down on 7/11, down at the World Trade Center, right after it came down, and I saw the greatest people I've ever seen in action," Trump said. "I saw the bravest people I've ever seen, including the construction workers, including every person down there."

7/11 is chain of convenience stores across the U.S.

The Republican frontrunner didn’t correct himself and instead went on to extol “New York values” which his rival, Ted Cruz had condemned earlier in the campaign.

Trump said it was the “values that makes us love this state despite it's problems. We love this state. We know it's going to come back. If I am president, it's going to come back so fast you won't even believe it."

Trump, a native New Yorker, built his real estate empire in the borough of Manhattan and has repeatedly spoken about the 9/11 attacks, particularly praising the first responders.

Trump is the heavy favorite to win the Tuesday’s primary with 95 delegates up for grabs.
