Former Bosnian Serb army chief Ratko Mladic, on trial for war crimes in The Hague, has been hospitalized with what doctors suspect is pneumonia.

His lawyer made the announcement Tuesday.

Mladic is on trial for genocide and war crimes in the 1992-to-1995 war in Bosnia-Herzegovina.  He has been accused of crimes against humanity, including planning the death of 8,000 Muslim men and boys over a six-day period in 1995.

Authorities located Mladic in May and extradited him to the international war crimes tribunal in The Hague after 16 years on the run.

A spokeswoman for the tribunal says Mladic was transferred to their custody with a series of pre-existing health conditions.

Some information for this report was provided by AP and AFP.

Video Boston Bomber Spent 6 Months in Russia’s Most Violent Republic

The news of the Boston Marathon bombings circled the globe, and resonated here in Dagestan, a majority Muslim republic in Russia, on the shores of the Caspian Sea. Last year, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the older of two brothers suspected of the bombings and a long-time Boston resident, returned to Dagestan, where he had lived for a year during his youth. Dagestan was the land of his maternal ancestors. But in the last two years, this republic of 3 million people has gained notoriety as the region with the highest level of political and religious violence in all of Russia.
