U.S. media are reporting that President Barack Obama has picked his hometown of Chicago to host his future presidential library.
Reports say the president selected the University of Chicago over the University of Illinois at Chicago, the University of Hawaii and Columbia University, Obama’s alma mater.
The announcement has not been made public, and a site at the University of Chicago has not been chosen. The university has proposed two potential sites.
Obama and his wife, Michelle, have strong ties to the University of Chicago. He served as a senior lecturer at the university law school and she was an executive at the university hospital.
The Obamas also own a home near the university.
The library will not be built until Obama leaves office in January 2017.
Last week, Illinois state lawmakers passed legislation specifying that the library and another planned project, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, could be built on parkland or on Chicago’s lakefront.
