Obama Urges Republicans to Compromise

VOA News
U.S. President Barack Obama has called on Congress to stop the $1.2 trillion in automatic cuts to domestic and defense programs.  The cuts known as the sequester are set for March 1.

In his weekly address Saturday, the U.S. leader said the spending cuts threaten thousands of jobs and national security, but could be avoided with "just a little compromise" from Republicans.

Obama said, however, that "unfortunately, it appears the Republicans in Congress" have decided "that instead of asking anything of the wealthiest Americans, they would rather let the cuts "fall squarely on the middle class."

President Obama said he believes the deficit reduction should be done in a "balanced way with smart spending cuts, entitlement reform, and tax reform."

U.S. Senator John Hoeven of the north central state of North Dakota delivered the Republican Address.  He accused President Obama of blocking economic growth and private-sector job creation with "regulation, red tape and bureaucracy."

there's some heavy censoring going on at voa. i earlier posted a nicely descriptive comment on how biased this article was, but it wasn't posted. let's see if they would rather post this less critical and fairly empty comment instead

I have a better idea, how about Mr. Obama compromise and actually cut spending and actually forgo a tax increase. Why is it compromise when the conservatives are asked to abandon their principals but not when the liberal left is asked to do the same. Mr. Obama hasn't negotiated in good faith since he began his original campaign.

Video Valley Fever Raises Concerns in California, Arizona

A longstanding health problem in California's Central Valley has worsened in recent years, leading health officials to order the relocation of 3,000 prisoners from two state prisons. But the disease affects much of the population in some rural communities and, Mike O'Sullivan reports, while it often goes unnoticed, it sometimes can be devastating for patients.
