Officials in Pakistan say seven militants have been killed in a suspected U.S. drone strike in a tribal area near the Afghan border.
Authorities say missiles struck a compound late Friday about 100 kilometers southwest of Miranshah, the main town in the North Waziristan tribal district. U.S. officials have not commented on the claims.
The deaths come just two days after newly-sworn Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif took office for a third time and asked the United States to end its campaign of drone attacks targeting militants in tribal regions.
Since his election, Mr. Sharif has also voiced "deep disappointment" over a May 29 drone strike that killed Wali-ur-Rehman, the deputy commander of the outlawed Pakistani Taliban militant group, and five others.
The U.S. government had offered up to $5 million for information on Rehman's location, while Pakistan's government had a $500,000 bounty on him.
Pakistan has voiced concerns that the U.S. drone attacks violate national sovereignty and kill innocent civilians.
U.S. President Barack Obama said last month he was set to scale back the drone program.
