Polls Open in Japan Parliamentary Election

Japanese voters are going to the polls Sunday in an election for the upper house that is expected to help end six years of parliamentary deadlock.

Public opinion polls indicate that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's ruling bloc will win. A victory would give Mr. Abe's Liberal Democratic Party and the junior partner New Komeito control of both houses of parliament.

At stake are 121 seats, half of the upper house seats. Polls close at 8 p.m. local time - 1100 UTC - with vote counting to begin immediately thereafter.
