Israeli police say a man whose parents and siblings were killed in a terror attack has defaced a memorial to slain Israel leader Yitzhak Rabin to protest the proposed release of a Palestinian prisoner linked to the attack.
Police said Friday that the man, identified as Shvuel Schijveschuurder, splattered paint on the former prime minister's memorial in Tel Aviv and scrawled the words "price tag" across it. Rabin was assassinated at a peace rally in 1995.
The man's parents and at least three of his siblings were among 15 people killed in a 2001 suicide bombing at a Jerusalem restaurant. He was released from custody Friday afternoon and banned by authorities from entering Tel Aviv for two weeks.
Earlier this week, Israeli and Palestinian officials announced an agreement on a prisoner swap plan that calls for the release of 1,027 Palestinian inmates in exchange for captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit. News reports say the releases could begin as early as Tuesday.
