Actor Harrison Ford was injured Thursday in the crash of a small airplane on a Los Angeles-area golf course.

Ford, 72, reportedly suffered multiple gashes to his head in the crash, which occurred at the Penmar Golf Course in Venice, just over a mile (1.6 km) from Santa Monica Airport. Officials said he was breathing and conscious when he was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was listed in fair to moderate condition.

Officer Nuria Vanegas of the Los Angeles Police Department said a mechanical failure caused the crash.

Ford was the only person aboard the plane at the time of the incident.

The actor's publicist could not be reached for comment.

Ford, best known as archaeological adventurer Indiana Jones in "Raiders of the Lost Ark'' and as the space hero Han Solo in the "Star Wars'' series, is a longtime aviation enthusiast who owns and pilots several planes.

Carlos Lugo, 63, said he was playing golf at the Penmar course when he saw a plane that he believed had taken off from nearby Santa Monica Airport lose power and turn around in an apparent attempt to return to the runway.

"When he flew over us, we knew it was too late to make it back to the airport,'' Lugo said.

The plane went through some trees and landed near the eighth hole at the golf course, he said.

Ford suffered a broken leg last year while filming in England on the set of a new "Star Wars" episode. Production on the movie was halted for two weeks as he recovered.
