Severe flooding caused by monsoon rain forced over 40,000 people to evacuate in Malaysia on Friday, local media reported.

Malaysia's state news agency, Bernama, reported that at least two people had died, while a father and his son are missing.

Bernama reported in the state of Pahang alone, more than 38,000 people have sought refuge in evacuation centers.

The worst hit states are in east coast Malaysia and include Pahang, Terengganu, Kelantan and Johor.

TV footage showed vehicles and houses submerged in muddy water while people moved belongings and food supplies on small boats.

Residents on the east coast of Malaysia suffer from flooding almost yearly due to monsoon rains that usually last from late November to February.
