The Rolling Thunder caravan of motorcycles rolled into Washington Sunday, to support the U.S. military on the country's Memorial Day weekend, but it turned into a political rally for the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, real estate titan Donald Trump.

As thousands of motorcyclists cheered their support, Trump vowed, "We have to rebuild our military. It's been decimated."

He said that if he is elected, "We're going to knock the hell out" of Islamic State jihadists in the Mideast.

But Trump made no mention of one of the controversies from early in his months-long run for the Republican nomination, when he said the 2008 Republican presidential nominee, Senator John McCain, was not a hero for being captured as a prisoner of war in Vietnam in the 1960s.

More recently, Trump, who avoided military service with a series of deferments, has had to answer questions about why he had not met a pledge to send $6 million to veterans groups after a fundraiser in January. He told the military veterans on Sunday that he will name the groups receiving the money this week.

The annual Rolling Thunder event, first organized in 1988, is billed as a tribute to prisoners of war and Americans missing in action, a day ahead of Memorial Day Monday, when the United States honors its war dead.

Ray Manzo, a former U.S. Marine Corps corporal, is one of the men credited for organizing the Rolling Thunder event. A letter from Manzo was published in Outlaw Biker magazine in 1987 calling for riders to descend on Washington the Sunday before Memorial Day.

Nearly  3,000 riders came for that first ride. The organization says the event has now grown to more than a million riders and spectators combined.  A half million motorcycles are expected to rumble Sunday afternoon from the Pentagon to the Vietnam War Memorial for a rally in an event the group calls a Ride for Freedom.

The group's mission has grown alongside the ride. The organization lobbied for the Missing Service Personnel Act of 1993, which prohibits the U.S. Defense Department from declaring a service member killed in action without substantial evidence.

It has also established a nonprofit organization that provides cash aid to veterans' families.

Over the years, Rolling Thunder has become a more politicized group frustrated with Washington lawmakers and the administration of President Barack Obama.

"I don't think anyone in Washington, D.C. really cares about investigating the live POWs that the government knows were left behind," writes Sgt. Artie Muller, Rolling Thunder's national executive director, and Joseph Bean, the group's national president, in a letter posted on the Rolling Thunder website.

The letter, dated December 2015, also says "This administration keeps getting us deeper and deeper in the war against Islam . . . Why are we not demanding reparation payments from the Islam countries for the expense of what these wars cost the America taxpayers....We better pray for a new administration in the 2016 election that will follow the Constitution of the United States and worry about America, our people and our troops first."

Motorcycle enthusiasts have frequently attended Trump campaign rallies to show their support for the candidate they believe is different from career politicians they accuse of degrading the military and ignoring veterans.

At a political event last July when asked about McCain, who was described by the questioner as a "war hero,' Trump responded “He’s not a war hero. He’s a war hero because he was captured. I like people that weren’t captured, O.K.?”

Trump may not be the "ideal" President, but he's by FAR the best choice among the candidates running for president. He's vowed to restore our military (which has been reduced to the size it was in 1940!) and to take care of our veterans. I have not heard one word from Hillary about taking care of our veterans. Not to mention she will only reduce the military even more to pay for her "Obamacare expansions." Obama has already reduced our military to PREWWII levels in a time when our enemies have never been stronger and global Islamic terrorism never more a threat! If Hillary becomes president we won't have a military left at all! The truth is whenever we have a liberal president, our military suffers.

Trump is the only candidate qualified to be President of the United States. Hillary Clinton is a globalist who has sold out American for money time and time again. Bernie Sanders is a dreaming socialist who preaches a design for government that has proven to be a failure every time it was tried. This is your last chance America. Vote for someone who will restore America's independence or continue to degenerate as subordinate part of a global government that will sap our resources until the whole world is uniformly poor.

Marcus Aurelius II-->I agree with everything you said. By now you would think all of America would know Hillary Clinton is a corrupt liar who has betrayed our country time and time again. Just research her past! Her ENTIRE career has been plagued by scandals and abuse of power. She's already jeopardized our National Security by not being responsible enough to handle Top Secret and Classified emails, yet somehow she's qualified to be the Commander in Chief? Give me a break. Americans are FED UP with the Clinton's always seeming to escape justice. It's time for Hillary to be held accountable for her treacherous actions. If you value our military, then Trump is the ONLY way to go.

The trouble here is that vets and the military seem to only bend the ears of Republicans. You can't help but to wonder why. You see, Obama blasted Bush for the failings of the VA system. Even though Obama has done far worse, Obama told us that there wasn't sufficient funding for the VA to help fix the broken down hospitals for our veterans. Obama's solution, give Kenya a billion dollars (who didn't ask for it nor need it). Thanks for showing us, the veterans, how you truly feel about us!

Thanks for the heads up, sista? I did check and found out why the Republicans kept shooting down Obama's ridiculous bills supposedly to benefit the military. All their bills contained more special interests monies for their own selfish and worthless causes than monies for the military. Thanks for asking me to look further, you da gurl!!!!

President Obama has been trying to get bills passed for VA hospitals. He has also tried to get pay raises for active duty which should be higher than the 1.5% they ended up with from the Executive Order that he did at the beginning of this year. You need to check and see how many time the Republican ran Congress has vetoed anything to do with the military. Don't forget about the Armed Services Retirees did not receive their cost of living increase but the Republican ran Congress received their raise.

If Hillary was there, would she acknowledge the sacrifices of those who lost their lives in Benghazi? You would have to ask yourselves, "what difference would it make?"

Memorial Day is about those who have sacrified and died for our country. What does Trump do? He makes himself the center of his speech. Stating the bikers were there to protect him. Even had the nerve to say that he had hoped to draw as many people as Martin Luther King. His delusion of grandeur makes me fear, what'll happen, should he actually become president.

Gary, How is Trump going to come up with more jobs than President Obama and his administration has. President Obama and his administration have helped to create over 13.2 million jobs and are adding about 300,000 per month in the private sector. If you want to talk about unemployment the rate is at 5%. The Republicans like to say it is higher because they are adding on school children under 15, the elderly and the disabled.

My beef was, that this egoist turned Memorial Day inte a political rally where he brags about just about everything about himself, rather than focus on those, whose Day it was. And - has Trump ever laid out what his plans are to achieve all he says he's going to do. Talk is easy. There's also a Congress that's not going to roll over and play dead.

Trump is not one to miss out on an opportunity to make headlines, why would he miss such an opportunity as this? He is a master showman, a billionaire first and an entertainer second. Trump will make a joke of the Oval Office and an insult of the mantle of Commander-in-Chief.
Rolling Thunder has become nothing more than a special interest group, far from the noble ideals they started out with and are now long forgotten in the dust.

If Hillary was there, would she acknowledge the sacrifices of those who lost their lives in Benghazi? You would have to ask yourself, "what difference would it make?" What irritates me, about you, is your name and state. It is that Mark Warner was probably the best governor Virginia ever had, and a Democrat. Being a die-hard Reaganite, I personally wrote to Mark asking him to run for pres. As of right now, there is no choice to be made.
