Shi'ite Professor Killed in Pakistan Shooting

A Pakistani university professor has been fatally shot on his way to work in the city of Gujrat, in an incident officials blame on sectarian violence.

Officials said the professor, Syed Shabbir Hussain Shah, and his driver were killed by at least one gunman on a motorcycle as they made their way to Gujrat University on Tuesday. Police confirmed that Shah belonged to the Shi'ite sect that has been targeted by rival Sunni Muslims.

U.S.-based Human Rights Watch reports more than 800 Shi'ites have been killed in targeted attacks in Pakistan since 2012, including about 400 this year.
