Officials in northwest Pakistan say insurgents have attacked an army checkpoint, killing at least 13 security personnel and 10 civilians, including women and children.

Officials say the army post, located in Serai Naurang town in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, was attacked before dawn Saturday.

Security officials say 12 militants were killed in the attack.

The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the assault.

A Taliban spokesman said four suicide bombers attacked the army checkpoint Saturday. He said the attack was in retaliation for the recent deaths of two Taliban commanders in U.S. drone strikes.
