Gunmen have shot and killed a Somali musician who worked at a radio station and made comments about militants.

Sources say two men killed Warsame Shire Awale late Monday near his home in the Somali capital, Mogadishu.

Independent radio journalist Mohamed Mohamud Turyare was shot last week in Mogadishu.

A top official with media rights group Reporters Without Borders said the attack on Turyare stems from the "permanent climate of impunity and hostility toward freedom of information" in Somalia.

He said Somalia and Syria are now the two deadliest countries for the media.

The latest deaths bring to 18 the number of journalists killed in Somalia this year.

Turyare worked for the Shabelle Media Network, which has seen several employees killed in acts of violence in recent years.
