South Africa says Nelson Mandela continues to respond to treatment, but remains in "critical but stable" condition.

A statement from the presidency says President Jacob Zuma visited Mandela in the hospital Thursday morning. It was his second visit with the ailing anti-apartheid icon in less than 24 hours.

Mandela, who was South Africa's first black president, has spent 33 days in a Pretoria hospital since being rushed there for a recurring lung infection.
