Stars Shine at Academy Awards

Hollywood's finest have gathered for the Academy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles, with Ben Affleck's Iran hostage drama Argo hoping to edge out Steven Spielberg's Lincoln for best film of the year.

Lincoln was the favorite with 12 nominations when the Hollywood awards season started two months ago. But Argo has won the best picture honor in almost all the other awards this season.

Ben Affleck was not nominated for best director, leaving Spielberg as the likely winner in that category.

Other films with several nominations are Ang Lee's shipwreck tale Life of Pi with 11, French revolutionary musical Les Miserables and romantic comedy Silver Linings Playbook with eight apiece, and Argo with seven.

Daniel Day Lewis is the front-runner in the best actor category for his role in Lincoln. Anne Hathaway is pegged as the likely winner as the best supporting actress in Les Mis.

The Oscar winners are chosen by some 5,800 movie industry professionals who are members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

This year's ceremony will be hosted by Seth MacFarlane.
