U.S. authorities asked visitors to leave the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor Friday after a report of a suspicious package.

The National Park Service said in a statement later Friday that all visitors and personnel were safe.

Local media reported that the evacuation was ordered after someone telephoned a bomb threat Friday morning and police dogs detected a suspicious scent on a package.

The New York City police department said its bomb squad assisted in a security sweep of the site, one of the most popular tourist destinations in the New York area.

The Statue of Liberty is on an island in the Hudson River, between Manhattan and New Jersey.

Tourists visiting the site posted pictures and videos online of crowds of people boarding ferries to leave the island.
