10 Electrocuted During Protest Outside Indian Police Station

Police say 10 people have been electrocuted by an overhead high-voltage wire that fell on them during a protest outside a police station in India's northeastern state of Assam.

Police officer S.N. Singh said hundreds of people armed with wooden batons and bows and arrows came to the police station on Monday demanding that police hand them two suspects arrested for the murder of two members of their tea workers community.

Singh said that as police fired in the air to disperse them, some bullets hit the overhead cable, which came crashing down on the protesters in the town of Pengeri, 550 kilometers (345 miles) east of Gauhati, the capital of Assam state.

Singh said the angry crowd wanted to punish the two suspects themselves.
