Military authorities say a U.S. Marine has shot and killed two colleagues at Marine Corps Base Quantico in the eastern state of Virginia before committing suicide.

The shootings began around 11 p.m. Thursday, prompting a lockdown of the base, about 60 kilometers south of Washington. The lockdown was lifted within hours Friday.

Officials say the shooter killed two people near the officer candidate school at the base before barricading himself inside a barracks near the school. Law enforcement found the shooter dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside the barracks.

Marine officials said the two victims and the gunmen were all Marines. Officials said the shooter is believed to have been a staff member at the school. Authorities have not released the names of the victims or the gunman. An investigation is under way.
