Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has replaced his army chief amid tensions with the military over an alleged plan to install his son as successor.
General Aronda Nyakarima was moved to the civilian post of internal affairs minister, while General Katumba Wamala was named new head of the army.
Nyakarima was one of the generals listed in a leaked memo as opposing Museveni's alleged plan to have his son, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, succeed him as president.
The Ugandan government has denied there is a succession plan for Museveni, who is in his late sixties and has ruled Uganda since 1986.
Two Ugandan newspapers that published reports about the memo, written by another general, were shut down by authorities this week as police searched their offices for documents.
Speaking to VOA, government spokesman Fred Opolot said the searches are lawful and necessary to protect national security.
Museveni's son currently commands the special forces group responsible for presidential security.
