Ibrahim Gambari, head of the United Nations and African Union peacekeeping mission in Darfur (UNAMID), said Wednesday that the mission's biggest concern is the decision of two of the main rebel leaders to return to the region.
Both the Justice and Equality Movement's Khalid Ibrahim and the Sudan Liberation Army's Abdul Wahid al-Noor, moved back to Darfur after being forced from exile in Tripoli and Paris respectively.
While the levels of violence in the eight-year-old Darfur conflict has decreased markedly in the past two years, UNAMID's Gambari says he is concerned that the return of these two leaders could cause a spike in fighting and roll back the gains made from recent successful peace talks between other Darfur rebel groups and the Sudanese government.
