The headquarters of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency have been renamed in honor of former president Bill Clinton.

Senator Barbara Boxer hosted a dedication ceremony on Wednesday in Washington. She sponsored legislation to change the building's name to the William Jefferson Clinton Federal Building.

Speaking at the ceremony, Clinton said his administration proved that pro-environmental policies and a growing economy can coexist, noting that such policies are necessary today.

Clinton made the EPA a cabinet-level department while in office.

Former EPA administrator Carol Browner, who served through both of Clinton's terms in office, attended the dedication. Other members of the Clinton administration and congressional leaders also were there.

The ceremony came as the U.S. Senate neared a confirmation vote on the nomination of Gina McCarthy as the new EPA administrator. She is now the agency's top clean air official.
