The U.S. Department of Defense said it is transferring two detainees from the Guantanamo Bay facility, following a review of their cases.
A Pentagon statement said Nabil Said Hadjarab and Mutia Sadiq Ahmad Sayyab will be handed over to the Government of Algeria. The two Algerian citizens were believed to be al-Qaida members and were detained in Afghanistan in December 2011.
The Pentagon said the review of their cases by six government agencies examined a number of factors, including security issues, before the two were approved for transfer.
The statement thanked the government of Algeria for "its willingness to support ongoing U.S. efforts to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility."
The Defense Department said 164 detainees remain at Guantanamo Bay.
