A fast-moving wildfire swept across a freeway Friday in the western U.S. state of California, burning cars and trucks and threatening homes in the area.
Television footage showed the fire, pushed by desert winds, burning on both sides of Interstate Highway 15, the main highway between Southern California and Las Vegas, Nevada.
Authorities shut down Interstate 15 in both directions, causing traffic to back up for miles. At least a dozen stationary vehicles were on fire. Many other motorists abandoned their cars and fled the scene.
Very strong winds were pushing the flames toward homes. However, there were no confirmed injuries.
Motorists stuck on the road described a harrowing scene.
"It's crazy. You're watching black clouds and white clouds of smoke, there's a ridgeline off to my right ... and it looks like any second flames will come over the ridgeline," one motorist said from his vehicle.
