Comoros electoral commission says ruling party candidate Ikililou Dhoinine has won the country's recent presidential election.
Officials announced Wednesday that Mr. Dhoinine received 61 percent of the vote in the election which the opposition and international observers say was marred by vote rigging and other irregularities.
Mohmed Said Fazul, his main challenger, received 33 percent.
All of the candidates were from the island of Moheli, as per the constitution, which calls for the presidency to rotate between the nation's three islands.
Sunday's elections brought an end to interim government mandate which allowed President Ahmed Abdallah Sambi to remain in office after his term expired in May.
The country has endured many coups and political disputes since becoming independent 35 years ago. African Union troops invaded the island of Anjouan in 2008 after the island's president refused to give up office.
