DRC Plane Crash Kills at Least 19

Officials in the Democratic Republic of Congo say at least 19 people were killed in a plane crash Wednesday, but that two others survived.

The deputy governor of Bandundu province, Vicky Mboso Muteba, says the passenger plane crashed after a failed attempt to land Wednesday at an airport in the western town of Bandundu. She says the plane apparently ran out of fuel and hit a house as it crashed. It is not clear if anyone on the ground was killed.

The United Nations confirmed the crash.

The DRC has one of the worst air safety records in the world, and crashes there are frequent. The country's aviation sector includes many decaying, Soviet-era planes.

All of the country's registered planes are on a European Union blacklist, meaning they are banned from flying into European airspace.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP and Reuters.
