Friday is November 11, 2011, or 11-11-11. Some people are interpreting this once in a century date as a lucky one, a time to get married or try to win money.
But does this date hold any significance according to numerology?
When we write Friday's date in shorthand, we see the number 11 in triplicate -- 11-11-11. Numerologist Patricia Kirkman, author of The Complete Idiot's Guide Numerology Workbook, writes on her blog ((www.patriciakirkman.com)) that hype around 11-11-11 is misleading.
Kirkman says there is more than one way to look at that date. "I think that probably the most important part of it is, if we take a look at it and break it down, that the 11-11-11 just using the numbers becomes a six [because 1+1+1+1+1+1=6]. Six is about the family, humanity, putting things in order, and isn't that what we really need to be doing right now?," Kirkman said.
Or, to look at the date another way, Kirkman explains you need to look at the digits in the year 2011, which equal four.
"It's a four universal year, so it's all about details of things. When we add the 11 for November, that puts us in a six universal month, which is all about perfection, wanting it perfect, trying to put things together for family, friends and make it a higher level of things," Kirkman said.
Add in the day of the 11th, Kirkman says, and you arrive at an eight day, which is about wanting to be in control.
"It's a very good day because it's very grounded. It will have issues to do with family, and it will give a luck factor that works with this," Kirkman said.
From ancient times to the present, people have studied numbers, such as the figures in a date, to arrive at their supposed influence on people's lives. Some cultures put great stock in it; others dismiss it entirely.
Kirkman has practiced numerology for about four decades. She is based in the southwestern U.S. state of Arizona where she says people are planning a number of activities this Friday.
"There's a lot of people that are having 11-11 parties or events, and it brings people together. Some people feel, 'Oh, it must be that things are going to end around me.' Well, no, I think we'll all see each other on the 12th," Kirkman said.
Kirkman says, in numerology, the number 11 is highly charged, attuned and creative, and it symbolizes enlightenment. The number one on its own is about new beginnings. And, she says, 11 can be viewed as two ones, which equal a two, a number that is about cooperation and partnership.
And more than the usual number of single people are looking to make a formal partnership on 11-11-11.
MSNBC television network reports that the clerk's office in Las Vegas, Nevada, a city known for huge casinos and tiny chapels for speedy weddings, has had an uptick in applications from couples looking to wed on 11-11-11. Vegas chapels and casinos are even offering special promotions for 11-11-11.
But is it a particularly auspicious date?
Kirkman says she believes luck is a state of mind. "I feel that when a person feels something, they can make a lot happen," Kirkman said. So whether it's a lucky day might depend on whether you're feeling lucky.
