Canadian pop star Justin Bieber was the leading winner at Sunday's American Music Awards, capturing four prizes including the award for artist of the year.

The 16-year-old also won the awards for favorite pop album and breakthrough artist at the ceremony in Los Angeles.

Bieber's success continues a string of American Music Awards dominance by teenagers. American singer Taylor Swift won five awards at last year's show, when she was 19 years old.

This year, Swift won a single award for best female country artist.

The other big winners include Eminem and Usher, who each won two awards. Colombian singer Shakira was named best Latin artist.

The show included performances by Bieber, Swift, Rihanna and the Black Eyed Peas.

Country music group Lady Antebellum won a single award, despite being nominated in five categories.

Other winners include country singers Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley, as well as rock group Muse.
