A British television station and a newspaper are reporting that British security services believe they have thwarted several major attacks planned by terrorists linked to Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida organization.
ITV News and the Daily Mail newspaper quote unidentified sources for their reports, which say London's busy Heathrow airport and skyscrapers in the Canary Wharf financial district were among targets for terrorist attacks similar to those carried out in the United States three years ago on September 11.
The sources told the media that security officials intervened to stop four or five such attacks in Britain since then, including plans for airplanes to be flown into tall buildings connected to the country's financial institutions.
British authorities have not commented on the reports.
