The head of the United Nations mission in Kosovo is in Belgrade for two days of talks with top Serbian officials.
U.N. representative Soren Jessen-Petersen met Sunday with Serbia-Montenegro's Foreign Minister Vuk Draskovic.
A statement later issued by Mr. Draskovic's office said that he had demanded protection for the province's Serb minority.
On Monday, Mr. Jessen-Petersen is scheduled to meet with Serbian President Boris Tadic and Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica.
Talks on the province's future between Kosovo's ethnic Albanian-led government and Serbian leaders are due to begin later this year. Kosovo's ethnic Albanian majority wants independence, while its Serb minority wants the province to remain part of Serbia.
The U.N. has been administering the area since 1999.
