New Kyrgyz Parliament Confirms PM Bakiyev

update

The newly elected parliament in Kyrgyzstan has confirmed opposition leader Kurmanbek Bakiyev as prime minister and also named him acting president.

Mr. Bakiyev reversed his earlier position and declared the newly elected parliament legitimate in an apparent effort to end a struggle between it and the old parliament.

The new parliament was chosen in an election earlier this month that the opposition said was rigged and which sparked the uprising that ultimately ousted President Askar Akayev.

Reports from Bishkek say Mr. Bakiyev's recognition of the new parliament may help bring political order, but it has angered protesters who helped opposition parties like his own bring down Mr. Akayev.

Some information for this report provided by AP, AFP and Reuters.
