Burma Rights Activists Launch Birthday Campaign for Aung San Suu Kyi

Burmese rights activists in the United States are trying to gather 6,000 birthday cards for Aung San Suu Kyi's 60th birthday.

The U.S. Campaign for Burma says it will deliver all 6,000 cards to the Burmese embassy in Washington on June 19 to protest rights activist Aung San Suu Kyi's continuing house arrest. It has asked people to mail birthday cards to its Washington headquarters.

Protesters also are planning demonstrations at Burmese embassies around the world on her birthday.

The Nobel Peace Prize laureate's nearly two-year detention and the ruling regime's refusal to begin democratic reforms continue to draw international criticism. Some member nations of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) have criticized the country as it prepares to assume the rotating chairmanship of the 10-member bloc in 2006.
