Reports from the scene say the demonstrators attempted to march to the presidential palace but were turned back by police using tear gas.
Earlier in the day, President Gutierrez told interviewers he planned to serve out his four year term, which ends in January 2007.
Late last week, the president dissolved the Supreme Court and declared a state of emergency. He said he took the actions in an effort to ease tensions in the nation after days of of protests over the government's restructuring of the Court late last year.
In December, Congress fired 27 of 31 justices after the president accused them of bias against him. The replacement judges were fired Friday.
