Nigeria: Scores Arrested, at least Four Dead in Religious Unrest

update

Police in Nigeria's northwestern state of Sokoto have arrested dozens of people following violence between rival Muslim groups that has left at least four dead.

A police spokesman in Sokoto, Mohammed Umar Daking, says 35 of those arrested have been charged in connection with two days of clashes between the Sunni Muslim majority and Shi'ites in Sokoto city's main mosque.

The violence erupted on Friday when Sunni worshippers tried to stop a radical Shi'ite leader from delivering a sermon during the afternoon prayers.

Sunnis object to the use of the Sokoto city mosque by Shi'ite Muslims.

This is the third time since February that tensions between Sokoto's two Muslim sects have turned violent.
