India Detains 500 Protesters in Bihar

Security personnel detain a supporter of India's main opposition National Democratic Alliance in Patna
Indian police have detained at least 500 demonstrators in Bihar who were protesting the recent dissolution of the state legislature.

The protesters clashed with police in the capital, Patna, Tuesday, and several hundred were detained.

On Monday, India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh dissolved the politically important state's legislature following months of political turmoil. He made the move after the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party came close to cobbling together a coalition. They did so by wooing lawmakers from a Congress party ally to end New Delhi's direct rule.

Fresh polls must be held in the state to elect a new legislative assembly, but there is no word on when a vote would take place.
