A newspaper report says the U.S. government has identified several relatively simple measures that would enhance security at airports and meet demands of growing passenger traffic.
The New York Times says a confidential report by the Department of Homeland Security proposes modest changes, such as expanding the use of explosives detection devices, adding armed guards, and reconfiguring baggage checkpoints.
In the Sunday edition of the Times, Homeland Security officials express concern about moving passengers through airports quickly without compromising screening procedures.
To avoid delays caused by people breaching security checkpoints, the report recommends things such as lockable gates and doors at exits. It says delays at X-ray machines could be avoided by having longer tables for passengers to place their belongings for screening.
