US Soccer Team Beats Panama in WC 2006 Qualifying


The U.S. Mens' soccer team defeated Panama, 3-0 Wednesday in a North and Central American and Caribbean Region (CONCACAF) World Cup football (soccer) qualifier Wednesday in Panama City.

The U.S. men scored three times in the first half and then held Panama scoreless. U.S. players Carlos Bocanegra, Landon Donovan and Brian McBride each scored a goal to lead the team.

The victory leaves the United States one point behind first-place Mexico in the six-nation regional qualifying group.

Earlier Wednesday, Mexico notched 2-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago. The win left the Mexicans with four wins and a tie and 13 points. The U.S. team is second with a 4-1 record and 12 points.

The top three teams in the region advance to the World Cup Finals in Germany next year. The fourth-placed team faces a playoff against the fifth-placed Asian team for a spot in the World Cup.
