Sudan, Darfur Rebels End Latest Peace Talks

update

Sudan's government and two rebel groups have pledged to continue seeking an end to more than two years of fighting in the western Darfur region.

Representatives meeting in Nigeria Tuesday signed a "declaration of principles" intended to guide future peace talks sponsored by the African Union.

AU officials say the next round of talks will begin August 24.

The latest deal calls for a solution to refugee and security problems, but does not include detailed proposals.

Meantime, a top U.S. official has expressed concern at humanitarian conditions in Darfur, despite an apparent decline in violence there.

Deputy Secretary of State Robert Zoellick says health conditions remain serious in Darfur, where fighting has displaced more than 2 million people.

He is to travel to Darfur and Khartoum later this week.
