Sixteen-year-old qualifier Agnes Szavay of Hungary has knocked top-seeded Francesca Schiavone out of the quarterfinals of the Modena International tennis tournament in Italy.
Szavay, the world's 301st-ranked player, dominated the match, ousting Schiavone in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. The Hungarian player has not lost a set in six matches at this tournament.
In the semifinals, Szavay takes on another Italian, Tathiana Garbin, who ousted Croatian Sanda Mamic in three sets (4-6, 7-6, 7-6).
The other semifinal has second-seeded Falvia Pennetta of Italy taking on fifth-seed Anna Smashnova of Israel. Pennetta defeated eighth-seeded Mariana Diaz-Olivia of Argentina (6-0, 6-2). Smashnova ousted French player Emilie Loit (6-1, 6-4).
