Egyptian Opposition Protests in Cairo, Calling for Reform

update

Several thousand Egyptian opposition supporters took to the streets of Cairo Sunday to demonstrate against President Hosni Mubarak.

The protesters, including members of Egypt's banned Muslim Brotherhood, chanted slogans against Mr. Mubarak. Egyptian security forces deployed around the protest, but there were no reports of violence.

The demonstration was the latest in the run-up to Egypt's first multi-candidate presidential election, set for September 7th.

Mr. Mubarak will face nine challengers as he seeks a fifth six-year term. Egypt's constitution was amended in May to allow more than one candidate in a presidential election. But the opposition contends the changes still make any serious challenge to Mr. Mubarak almost impossible.
