Belgrade Confirms Madrid Terror Suspect's Arrest

Authorities in Serbia and Montenegro have confirmed the arrest in Belgrade of a fugitive suspect in the bombings in Madrid last year that killed 191 people.

Serbian Interior Minister Dragan Jocic said Thursday that police detained Moroccan Abdelmajid Bouchar in June on charges of violating immigration laws. He said police confirmed Mr. Bouchar's identity on Tuesday.

Serbian authorities say they are considering extraditing Mr. Bouchar to Spain.

Spain's EFE news agency reports that Spain will seek the suspect's extradition.

Spanish officials say Mr. Bouchar escaped from an apartment building near Madrid on April 3, 2004 - just before police stormed the building in efforts to arrest several suspects in the deadly attacks. The suspected Islamic militants blew themselves up as police prepared for the assault.

The incident took place three weeks after the bomb attacks on Madrid's transit system.
