French Police Evacuate Immigrants from Unsafe Buildings

update

French police have evacuated at least 140 African immigrants from two buildings, which had been declared unsafe after a series of deadly house fires.

Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy ordered the police action after the fires, Friday and Monday, killed 24 people, mostly poor African immigrants.

The police raids prompted angry reactions but no resistance from the immigrants. Authorities have offered the evacuees, mostly people from Ivory Coast, temporary housing.

Thursday, Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin announced plans to transfer publicly owned land to Paris for at least 20-thousand new homes for poor city residents.
