300 Detained, Dozens Injured During Anti-King Rally in Nepal

update

Reports from Nepal say police in the capital, Kathmandu, have arrested about 300 people during continuing protests against King Gyanendra's seizure of absolute power.

The reports say police used batons Tuesday to disperse some 6,000 activists shouting anti-government slogans and throwing stones and bricks at police. Witnesses say dozens of people were injured in the skirmishes.

The rally, organized by a seven-party opposition alliance, moved into the city center despite a government ban on gatherings there.

Protesters demanding the restoration of democracy in the world's only Hindu kingdom have held daily rallies since last week.

The king dismissed the elected government on February 1, saying it failed to quell a decade-long Maoist insurgency that has claimed almost 12,000 lives.
